IPVanish has definitely stepped up their game since their last review. Not only have they improved speeds and accessibility, but also implemented a true ‘zero logs’ policy which has made their security that extra step better.
Like nearly every other VPN provider, IPVanish has one set plan with increasing discounts the longer you sign up for. Their prices are on the higher end of the average but you definitely get your money’s worth. They also provide a 7 day money back guarantee which provides ample time to test their service.
For a limited period of time you can also receive 20% off using the WAIT code. They have a wide variety of payment methods, ranging from the widely accepted PayPal/ Credit Card to the highly secure and safe BitCoin.
IPVanish is one of the top VPN providers available and this is unsurprising. They have a Tier 1 network of VPNs with servers in a whopping 59 countries, with major countries such as the UK and US having multiple servers to help deliver some of the best speeds in the business. They are also one of the only VPNs to provide VPNs in more exotic countries around the planet, such as Egypt and Panama.
Along side this they have a great team that provides top end security, and great customer support should you ever need it. They have also implemented a full zero logs policy – not even connection logs, which is superb.
While simultaneous connections are allowed this is slightly limited, in their words:You can install our software on an unlimited number of computers or mobile devices and use 1 OpenVPN connection and 1 other protocol (L2TP or PPTP) connection at the same time.
Security & Privacy
Most importantly, as stated, IPVanish now runs a full ‘zero logs’ policy. Unlike with a number of companies if you are paying with BitCoin, all that is required for signing up, is an email address and a password – the former of which could be anonymous. This mean that right off the bat you are able to protect yourself to a great level. Of course it is still possible to sign up in the normal fashion and they will keep this data secure.
As stated, now they keep absolutely zero logs. We previously had an issue with their logging policies, as they sent us a cease and desist for torrenting, which countered their both their ‘P2P allowed’ and ‘no logs’ policy. We gave this a test by torrenting an excessive sum, amongst other file storing methods, and so far have not received anything, nor have we noticed an unreasonable difference in performance.
IPVanish has a very nice detailed website, with clear and easy to find information. The personal Control Panel is also nicely laid out and easy to navigate with all the important information displayed, alongside a useful server information list.
Surprisingly, and slightly disappointingly, IPVanish doesn’t have 24/7 live support. Their live support is available during working hours (EST). On the upside, they have a great support FAQ (with some of the best setup guides that we have seen) and excellent an Ticket Support system, to supplement this. We found all their support types to be helpful and knowledgeable and were able to answer all of our requests with relative ease, though sometimes we had to press a tiny bit to get all of the information that we required. Their support forums were also very helpful and contained useful information and comment, both by users and employees alike.
As already mentioned, signing up is a straight forward process, like with most providers, and if you are using BitCoin you will only need to provide your email address and a password.
The Windows VPN client
The new IPVanish 2.0 client is a clear improvement from the previous version, and while it doesn’t pose as many different settings as a few other providers out there, it does have some nice features. You can easily chose your connection and location type, the latter of which you can choose through different methods: speed, location, map view, etc. You are also able to change your IP periodically, as well as launch on start up. There is also an account and support tab, but unfortunately this is just ported from the website. As with all other software, you can also control your connection from the taskbar.
Performance (Speed, DNS and IP Test)
We gave IPVanish our usual tests. We found no DNS leaks and the IP tests all came back clear. We also gave their L2TP and OpenVPN connections a test and the results, as expected, were very good.
|No VPN Speed||L2TP Speed||OpenVPN Speed|
Refreshingly IPVanish supports all major devices and operating systems. We decided to test the Android app to see how it would fair against the results we obtained through our computer. Don’t be surprised that the app is developed by Mudhook Marketing Inc, as this is just the parent company of IPVanish. The Android app by default provides you with an OpenVPN connection while the iOS app allows you to use PPTP and L2TP. Manual configuration for the other protocols is also provided, if you so wish.
